Joe Simrany to Receive Cha Jing Lifetime Achievement Award at World Tea East, Oct. 2 - 3 in Philadelphia
Award Celebrates Simrany's Considerable Contributions to the Specialty Tea Industry

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Sept. 11, 2012) –World Tea Media is set to present its Cha Jing Lifetime Achievement Award to Joe Simrany, president of the Tea Association of the U.S.A. Inc., the Tea Council of the U.S.A., Inc. and the Specialty Tea Institute, for his significant contributions to the tea industry. The award is scheduled to be presented to Simrany during World Tea East, the trade show that supports and fuels the expanding demand for specialty tea and related products in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic and Southeast United States. Registration for the event, which takes place Oct. 2 - 3 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Penn., is open at World Tea Media is the organizer of World Tea East, World Tea Expo, the North American Tea Championship and World Tea News.

The Cha Jing Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes and celebrates individuals who have made considerable contributions to the growth, innovation and education of the specialty tea industry throughout their lifetime. Since 1991, Simrany has served the tea industry through tireless service that's shaped and fueled the tea industry of today. In the 21 years that he has been involved with tea, the U.S. tea industry has grown from under $2 billion to over $8 billion. The United States is now the second largest tea importing country in the world (Russia is No. 1) and the sixth largest tea consuming country following China, India, the Russian Federation, Turkey and Japan.

George Jage, founder and director of World Tea Media, says, "It's an honor to recognize Joe for all he's done for the global tea community. The industry cannot thank him enough for his considerable contributions to tea. The work he's done every day for more than two decades has affected everyone involved in the business of tea --- from the growers to the independent retailers --- and, more often than not, that work has gone unannounced. It's a pleasure to shine the spotlight on Joe and applaud him for stimulating our industry and aiding each of our own businesses."

Rona Tison, senior vice president of corporate relations for ITO EN (North America) INC., a subsidiary of ITO EN, LTD., a purveyor of Japanese green tea products and beverages in the United States, says, "Joe is a leader in the tea industry, and he's most certainly helped the tea community on a broad spectrum of issues over the course of his career. From helping to educate the industry itself, to promotional efforts that communicated the many attributes of tea on a consumer level, Joe can be proud of his vast accomplishments. I know tea professionals everywhere are appreciative of all his efforts, which have helped propel tea even further in the marketplace. He is undoubtedly deserving of the Cha Jing Lifetime Achievement Award. Congratulations, Joe."

Over the years, Simrany has lead the Tea Association of the U.S.A by focusing on tea consumption and health benefits, as a means to raise consumer awareness and revitalize the U.S. tea industry. In addition to establishing Hot Tea Month in January and Iced Tea Month in June, he facilitated the Bermuda Accord, an agreement between the Tea Councils of the U.S.A., U.K., and Canada, to cooperate in funding scientific research to uncover the various health benefits of tea. This Accord was adopted and endorsed by The United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and partially funded by the World Bank for Commodities.

Simrany also formed the Specialty Tea Registry, which merged with the American Premium Tea Institute in 2002, to form the Specialty Tea Institute, an association specifically created to support the development of the specialty tea industry. He successfully defended the tea industry against numerous attacks over the years, including terrorism, the "Great Bacteria Scare" of 1995 and 1996, government allegations of abuses of worker rights in 2002, and many other bouts. He launched the Agricultural Plant Protection initiative, in cooperation with the United Kingdom and Canada, to focus producing countries on the proper use of substances. He furthermore spearheaded a meeting of 12 of the world's regulatory agencies, to seek support and begin the discussion for the harmonization of standards of tea. He was elected first vice chairperson of the 19th Session of the Intergovernmental Group on tea --- an FAO committee of the United Nations to help producing countries prosper. And he's currently a part of an FAO Working Group of the United Nations, to change how the world's regulatory authorities test for argo-chemical residues in tea, from leaf to cup.

Simrany will be honored at a special World Tea East networking reception on Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., in the Philadelphia Marriott Ballroom. This event is made possible in-part by ITO EN (North America) INC., Haelssen & Lyon North American Corp., Tea Importers, Inc., A. Holliday & Company, Inc., HTH Hamburger Teehandel GmbH Im- & Export, Martin Bauer Group, Tazo Teas, TeaSource, VAN REES and Mark T. Wendell Tea Company.
